"These major changes we are making, not with orders from above or outside, are fundamental for our survival," he said during an address at the Ermoupolis Arts Centre, at a meeting of bodies and organisations of the Southern Aegean islands.
The prime minister's visit to the island was not without incident, however. Groups of students in turned up to protest against the government's policy while the meeting with Syros local government officials was taking place and there were clashes with police, who used tear gas to drive them off.
Education ministry sources have expressed fears that further protests may take place during student parades across Greece on the occasion of the national holiday later in the week.
